OUT WITH THE BEACH UMBRELLA’S AND IN WITH THE RAIN UMBRELLA’S

umberella

Lot’s of rain last night and today finally, and the flowers and trees and grass are sighing with relief! It’s even a nice change from all that sunshine! (Sorry Ontario!)

I even brought out a sweater today, so I guess the season’s are moving quicker then I would like.

What else to do on a rainy day, then go to the movies. Tom thought we’d be the only one’s there on a Monday, but the theater was full! We went to see Meryl Streep in “Julia, Julia”, and it was very good. Meryl Streep is excellent as usual.

The other day, I had a letter from what used to be my cute and freckle face little neighbour, of about 7 years old, Brian, who is now grown, married and quite a business man.

He has created this wonderful little computer program that makes surfing very easy on the internet and omits having to submit passwords each time.

To make it easier, I’ll include his letter, but first, have a look at this article about Brian from my home town, Belleville Intelligencer Newspaper.

Way to go Brian! I’ll be watching every Dragon’s Den program watching for you and I wish you much luck!

A former Belleville resident is aiming high when he pitches his unique aerial video and photography business to the Dragons Den on CBC television.

Brian Whiten is president of Sedna Entertainment in Pickering and his business specialty is called Heliviz, a low altitude aerial video and photography venture using a UAV unmanned air vehicle, an advanced form of a remote-controlled helicopter.

"But it's anything than a toy. It's a professional airborne camera ship," Whiten said during a stop in Belleville Thursday to shoot aerial footage at Black Bear Ridge Golf Course and along the Riverfront Parrott Trail behind downtown Belleville.

The helicopter weighs about 25 pounds, measures six feet long and can travel 40 to 60 km/h and as high as 1,000 feet. It can shoot both high resolution photographs and high definition video for marketing purposes for such clients as corporations, golf courses, real estate developers, construction companies, land survey companies, ski resorts and businesses.

He has about $25,000 invested in the helicopter which also boasts a specialized gyro-stabilized camera system. It takes two people to operate heliviz - one for the camera and the other for the helicopter.

Whiten plans to show the Belleville footage during the June 9 taping of the Dragons Den. The telecast is scheduled to air later this summer.

The 32-year-old Whiten said he's looking forward to appearing on the show where contestants try to sell business ideas or products to a panel of wealthy business people, otherwise known as the Dragons.

"I'm a little apprehensive but we're excited to be on Dragons Den. But I know it's an uphill battle to win on the show," he said.

Whiten has one purpose in mind when he appears before the Dragons.

"We're looking for capital funding to make bigger and better equipment," Whiten said.

Whiten grew up in Belleville and attended both Belleville Collegiate Institute and, after it closed, Moira Secondary School. He went to Loyalist College and graduated from the two-year television broadcasting program.

He moved to Toronto and worked in production for both City Television and Much-Music before deciding to form his own company.

Sedna Entertainment Inc. was incorporated in May of 2005 and Heliviz took flight shortly afterwards.

"We have already done promotional videos and photo shoots for corporations, golf courses and real estate companies and we hope to expand into feature films and commercials," he said.

"The possibilities are endless and our tag line is 'experience a new perspective'," he said.

Whiten said the beauty of his helicopter is that it can fly lower than a real helicopter and maneuvers in very limited space. It can fly between trees and underneath bridges to capture a unique perspective.

"I can view what the camera sees from the ground at all times which opens the door to live production of both high resolution photos and high definition video," said Whiten.

Cathy Goddard, a television program teacher at Loyalist College, watched Whiten as he and his staff shot promotional videos in Belleville.

"I think he has a great idea. He's come up with something very innovative," she said.

Goddard said Whiten was a good student and extremely reliable.

"He always took a lead role in production and did a good job," she said.

Whiten's upcoming appearance on Dragons Den follows on the heels of another telecast featuring Belleville entrepreneur Randy Uens.

Late last year, Uens was successful in getting the Dragons to invest $500,000 in his Rhinobag venture in return for 50 per cent share of his growing company. However, Uens subsequently turned down the Dragons' investment offer.
